(23K) GOLD
The New England Carousel
Museum in Bristol announces that the second phase of the Carousel
restoration project is well underway. The opportunity to watch the
painting and gold-leafing of the Historic Bushnell Park Carousel
will be provided on Monday, July 5th from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The

historical restoration since 1980. His interior restoration
accomplishments include the sanctuary at Our Lady of Fatima in
Portugal, the Saint Patrick's Cathedral in New York City, and the
Saint Stanislaus' Church in New Haven, CT. In addition to his
restoration work, Mr. Karwowski works on creative new designs in

ANIMALS FIND A NEW HOME AT
THE CAROUSEL MUSEUM
Ten
antique wooden carousel pieces are due to arrive at the New
England Carousel Museum on March 15, thanks to a generous donation
by the Chicago-based department store, Marshall Field’s.
Once
used as a circus promotion, these vibrant animals have been kept
in the Marshall Field’s archive collection since the late 1960’s.
The New England Carousel Museum has been chosen as the new home
for these cherished animals, where their safekeeping will be
ensured for future generations. Tony Jahn, Corporate
Archivist/Historian for Marshall Field’s said, “Through our
commitment of giving back to the community, the donation of these
animals will once again bring joy and wonder to the lives of
others. Marshall Field’s is pleased that the New England Carousel
Museum is willing to accept this donation.”
The
donation consists of three horses, a steer, four pigs, and two
rabbits that will grace the Carousel Museum with their presence.
The horses were carved by Marcus Illions, an Englishman who, in
1909, formed his own carving company in Brooklyn, NY. The farm
animals were carved by Gustav Bayol, of France, in the early
1900s.
Louise DeMars, Executive Director of the Carousel
Museum said that, “we are honored to have been selected to receive
these wonderful pieces into our permanent collection. Seven of the
pieces are menagerie figures, which will be a welcome addition and
the three horses were carved by Illions, one of the premiere
carvers at the turn-of-the-last-century. The horses are inside
row pieces so they are smaller in size and less detailed but
nonetheless we are thrilled to receive them.” Special events will
be planned to introduce the new residents to museum visitors.
